In the “BALI Chalk Fund at 50” series, we have been asking our Trustees and Team members to think back over their own landscape and horticultural careers – whether these go back 50 years or not!

Paul Cowell, BALI Chalk Fund Trustee, Chartered Landscape Architect and owner of PC Landscapes takes the microphone next – how’s it been for you, Paul?

What do you wish you knew when you started your career in the landscape sector?

A career on the tools, overseeing or running things back at base may seem daunting and you might feel like you are not really “working” – but you are…!

What was the best piece of advice you received in your early days?

It has always been that you have to maintain a healthy home/life balance – it has to be a good combination of the two; they go hand in hand.

How has the fund developed over 50 years?

The fund has changed to reflect how the industry has changed over this 50 year period. But the last 5 years – that has really seen a monumental expansion in reach, support and funds raised – but there’s a long way to go! Expanding the Board with a diversity of Trustees has helped its development, and a heightened promotional programme across all platforms has given us a better profile, higher awareness and broader engagement with colleges and students.

This is just one in the latest series of “The BALI Chalk Fund at 50” series of mini-interviews.
