Archie Matthews: Our Landscape National Student of the Year 2025
January 12, 2026
The thrill and buzz of the BALI Landscape Awards 2025 is receding, and so we took a quieter moment to catch up with our 2025 BALI Chalk Landscape Student of the Year, Archie Matthews.
Archie stood out as our National winner this year for his relentless commitment and high achievement, pushing himself at the World Skills, academically and practically in his daily projects.
How do you feel about winning and attending the BALI Awards to receive your prize?
“Winning this award made me feel that all the hard work and effort I have been putting into my work and studies is definitely worth it. Stepping onto the stage alongside top performers and supporters felt like a defining moment – one where my name was out there and people truly knew who I was and what I do, something I had never dreamed of. As a result, I was offered a job by another landscaping company, which proves that the more you push yourself, the better the outcomes and opportunities that follow.
The reaction from my family, lecturers, employers and peers has been immense – they are very proud, especially with me also winning Gold at World Skills UK in the same week!”
What are you currently working on?
“I am currently involved in a project to convert an old bank into a multi-level composite deck featuring balustrades, steel wire elements, and raised beds, with stunning panoramic views.”
What’s next for you in 2026?
“Whilst the job offer at the Awards was tempting, I want to finish off my studies and continue developing my hands-on skills working for West Hill Garden and Landscaping Services in Somerset. I’m a Landscape Assistant and combine this practical work with continuing my Advance Certificate in Landscape Construction.”

What would you say to future students who may be considered for the Top Student Award in 2026?
“Make sure you take in every little bit of information you get, every opportunity and have pride in everything you do, you will never know what the opportunities are when that next door opens.”
The BALI team also caught up with Archie at FutureScape 2025 in October to get full lowdown on his career to date and his BALI Chalk Student Award win. To hear the full story, listen to episode 8 of the Dig Deep podcast: Young Landscapers on Finding Their Way.
